Russia: Two Soldiers Die In Chechnya

Moscow, 2 November 2000 (RFE/RL) - Russian news agencies today say two Russian soldiers died and several others were wounded in two attacks by Chechen separatist fighters. The Russian news agency RIA Novosti said two men opened fire with automatic weapons on a Russian military unit in the Chechen capital Grozny, killing one serviceman and wounding several others. The AVN military news agency reported that in Stariye-Atagi, 15 kilometers south of Grozny, another Russian soldier was killed when his military vehicle was ambushed by an unknown number of men. Despite the ongoing attacks, Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev today said that "only two or three groups of some 300 fighters each" are still resisting federal rule in the breakaway republic.
