Chechnya: Putin Promises To Provide Funds

Moscow, 9 November 2000 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin today says he will allocate extra funds to rebuild war-torn Chechnya and for refugees displaced by the 13-month conflict. It was not immediately clear how much money will be allocated for Chechnya and the more than 250,000 people displaced by ongoing fighting in the breakaway republic.

The RIA-Novosti news agency quoted Putin's spokesman Aleksei Gromov as saying the funds should be distributed with "full transparency" to specific persons.

Yesterday, Putin was in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don for talks on Chechnya with the pro-Kremlin civilian administrator in the republic, Akhmad Kadyrov, as well as with regional leaders.
