Russia: Leading Journalist Summoned By Prosecutors

Moscow, 20 November 2000 (RFE/RL) - One of Russia's top journalists has been summoned for questioning today by Russian prosecutors. The news that Yevgeny Kiselyov had been called for questioning came following his broadcast last night on NTV television, the flagship of the Media-MOST group. The motive for the questioning is not clear. Kiselyov is general-director of NTV and host of its political commentary and news show "Itogi," known for reports critical of Kremlin policies.

NTV was Russia's only nationwide independent television network until Friday, when the state-dominated natural gas monopoly Gazprom announced it had become its largest shareholder after debt settlement negotiations.

Media-MOST chairman Vladimir Gusinsky is sought by Russian prosecutors who are investigating him for fraud. Gusinsky has been abroad for some time.
