Kosovo: Prosecutors Charge U.K. Soldiers With Albanian Killings

London, 4 December 2000 (RFE/RL) -- The British Defense Ministry said today that three British soldiers have been charged in connection with the killing of two armed ethnic Albanians in Kosovo last year. A ministry spokesman told Reuters that he could give no details of the charges issued by local prosecutors in Kosovo. The Independent newspaper in Britain reported today that the soldiers were from a parachute regiment in the NATO-led KFOR peacekeeping force. The newspaper said the soldiers acted in self defense when shooting two members of the Kosovo Liberation Army in Pristina in July 1999.

The Independent said a pre-trial hearing has taken place and a full court-martial is due soon.
