Poland: Schroeder In Warsaw On Historic Anniversary

Warsaw, 6 December 2000 (RFE/RL) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is due to visit Warsaw today to attend a ceremony at the site of the Polish capital's former Jewish ghetto. Schroeder will attend the formal naming of a square for former German Chancellor Willy Brandt, who made an historic visit to the site 30 years ago. During that visit, Brandt dropped to his knees before a monument to Jewish heroes in a gesture of atonement for Nazi crimes against Polish Jews during World War II.

The Nazi occupiers crowded hundreds of thousands of Polish Jews into the Warsaw ghetto before killing them.

Schroeder's visit also comes ahead of the European Union's reform summit in Nice, France, which is due to open tomorrow. The summit is aimed at preparing the EU to accept Poland and other Central and Eastern European countries as members in the near future.
