Ukraine: Parliament Passes Resolution Urging Quicker Action In Missing Journalist Case

Kyiv, 21 December 2000 (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine's parliament today passed a resolution urging the government to speed up its investigation into the disappearance of an opposition journalist.Heorhiy Gongadze was reported missing in the capital Kyiv in September. Journalists and some legislators say he was most likely the victim of a politically motivated attack. Opposition Socialist party leader Olexander Moroz made public a tape last month that he says implicates President Leonid Kuchma and two of his top advisors in the journalist's disappearance. Kuchma has denied any role in the case.

In its non-binding resolution, the parliament called for an authenticity check of the tape by independent experts.
