Yugoslavia: Serbian Interior Minister Escapes Ambush

Belgrade, 16 February 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Gunmen opened fire on a car in a convoy escorting Serbian Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic early today. Police said no one was hurt in the attack. Beta news agency said two cars tried to stop Mihajlovic's car in central Belgrade. They said his driver avoided the obstacle, and then the gunmen started shooting at the convoy.

No further details of the incident were immediately available. Yugoslav Interior Minister Zoran Zivkovic told independent Belgrade Radio B-92 that he believes the incident was a message from supporters of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic for Yugoslavia's new leadership to "allow crime and corruption to flourish in Serbia." Zivkovic said this will not happen.
