Belarus: Police Arrest 25 At Anti-Lukashenka Protest

Minsk, 21 April 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Belarusian police arrested more than 25 people today at a student demonstration in Minsk against President Alyaksandr Lukashenka. About 1,000 students gathered at the unsanctioned demonstration, sponsored by the ecological group Zubr. Some passed out buttons that read: "I know who the main fool in the country is," and leaflets proclaiming the park in central Minsk a zone free of "Lukashism."

They also mocked Lukashenka's passion for sports by playing hockey on the pavement wearing masks resembling the president.

Police told the demonstrators to disperse and detained at least 25 people.
