Moscow, 10 May 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Russian news agencies are reporting that a fire broke out overnight in a regional command post of the Russian Defense Ministry's space program. ITAR-TASS and Interfax news agencies quote unnamed Defense Ministry officials as saying the fire broke out in a three-story command post near Serpukhov in the Kaluga region, 160 km south of Moscow.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.
ITAR-TASS quoted Defense Ministry officials as saying the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in a power supply cable.
Separately, European Union Environment Commissioner Margot Walstrom today continues talks in Moscow on nuclear security and the environment.
Walstrom is also discussing preparations for a summit between the EU and Russia scheduled for 17 May in Moscow.
ITAR-TASS says Walstrom is today expected to meet with Economic Development Minister German Gref, Natural Resources Minister Boris Yatskevich, and other officials.
