UN: War Crimes Chief Prosecutor To Visit Macedonia

Skopje, 20 November 2001 (RFE/RL) -- The chief prosecutor for the UN war crimes tribunal is due to visit Macedonia today to discuss allegations of war crimes committed during fighting earlier this year between government forces and ethnic Albanian rebels. Carla Del Ponte is set to meet officials from the Macedonian government and the international community in the capital Skopje.

The International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia has jurisdiction over Macedonia as one of six former Yugoslav republics, but has not opened any formal investigations in Macedonia.

But the tribunal based in The Hague is gathering information to determine if the rebels committed war crimes in Macedonia during the six-month rebellion.
