Macedonia: Multiethnic Police Force Enters Tetovo

Skopje, 17 January 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Macedonia's multiethnic police force today entered the northwestern town of Tetovo, a former ethnic Albanian rebel stronghold. The multiethnic police patrol is part of a plan to return police units to former conflict zones following a peace accord signed in August.

The move came one week after thousands of protesters attempted to block police from entering the town.

The police force currently controls 25 of 60 former strongholds of the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army.
