Ukraine: Kuchma, Lukashenka Welcome Russia-NATO Partnership


Kyiv, 29 May 2002 (RFE/RL) -- The presidents of Ukraine and Belarus today welcomed Russia's new partnership with NATO. Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka made the comments while meeting in Chernigov, Ukraine.

Kuchma said cooperation with NATO is essential to stability on the continent. He has expressed interest in joining the alliance.

Lukashenka did not rule out that Belarus may follow Ukraine's lead and move closer to NATO. He said every measure should be taken to promote peace and security.
