Baku, 4 June 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Police in Azerbaijan said today that a protester was killed and many more were injured when police clashed overnight with demonstrators in a suburb of Baku. A police statement said 200 residents of Nardaran participated in the demonstrations and were armed with stones, petrol bombs, and sharp objects.
Police said the demonstrators attempted to free prisoners arrested last month for bursting into the office of a regional official and trying to force him to resign. The statement said 35 police officers were injured.
Local news reports said about 30 protesters were also hurt and described exchanges of fire with live ammunition. The violence took place as oil industry executives gathered for an international conference in Baku.
