Tehran, 6 June 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's President Mohammad Khatami plans to visit Afghanistan soon after next week's (10-16 June) Loya Jirga meeting to choose a new transitional government. Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency today quoted a Foreign Ministry source as saying Khatami's trip will take place "in the next few weeks." The exact date of the trip has not been set. The Afghan Embassy in Tehran said last week that Khatami was planning to visit Afghanistan on 9 June, before the Loya Jirga.
No Iranian president has made an official visit to Afghanistan since the Islamic revolution of 1979. Afghanistan's interim leader Hamid Karzai has invited Khatami to visit.
