Geneva, 18 June 2002 (RFE/RL) -- UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers said yesterday in Geneva that more than 1 million Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan. Lubbers said up to 2 million Afghans could return home by the end of the year, adding that more financial contributions and food aid are urgently needed from the international community.
The UNHCR said the largest number of returnees, 920,000, came from Pakistan. Some 75,000 came from Iran and another 9,000 from Central Asia.
