Kabul, 6 July 2002 (RFE/RL) -- The Afghan Interior Ministry said that two gunmen assassinated one of the vice presidents of the Afghan Transitional Authority today at a ministry building in Kabul. An RFE/RL correspondent in Kabul reported that machine-gun fire was directed at Haji Abdul Qadir's car, which then crashed into a wall.
A convoy of senior Afghan officials, police, and ambulances has driven inside the ministry grounds where the incident appears to have occurred. All roads around the area have been closed.
Qadir was one of three deputy chiefs of the Afghan transitional government. He was also the minister of public works.
Two of his bodyguards were reportedly killed as well.
