Iran: Death Toll Reaches 42, Warnings On Further Floods

Tehran, 17 August 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's official news agency IRNA says 42 people have died from floods in the northern province of Golestan. IRNA said yesterday that the Interior Ministry's Natural Disaster Task Force gave a warning of further floods in Golestan.

Hundreds of residents of flood-hit villages in the province have been left homeless by the floods. A bus carrying at least 30 passengers has been missing since the floods began.

The floods, triggered by torrential rains since 12 August, have severed power lines, uprooted trees, and blocked roads over a huge area.

More than 200 people were killed last year during floods in the same province. The floods then also left more than 10,000 people homeless.
