Russia: Moscow Explosion Leaves At Least Nine Dead

Moscow, 21 August 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Nine bodies have now been recovered from the rubble of a Moscow apartment building that partially collapsed yesterday following an explosion. Our correspondent says at least five people were injured and that officials believe a further 10 to 12 people could still be under the rubble. It is still unclear how many people were inside at the time of the collapse. Some 300 rescue workers are at the scene.

Police officials say they believe the explosion was caused by a natural-gas leak, though they are still not ruling out the deliberate destruction of the building. Authorities said they found no traces of explosives in the remains of the building.
