Serbia: Presidential Election Fails Again

Belgrade, 8 December 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Serbian authorities confirm that today's repeat presidential election has failed because of insufficient turnout. Current Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica (pictured) was far ahead in the vote count. The State Electoral Commission said turnout was estimated at 44 percent of the electorate. That's below the 50 percent required to validate the vote. A similar election failed in October on the same grounds.

Of the three candidates the current Yugoslav president, Vojislav Kostunica, ended ahead of the nationalists Borislav Pelevic and Vojislav Seselj.
