Iran: Students And Religious Vigilantes Clash Again

Tehran, 9 December 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Members of Iran's hard-line Basij militia today broke up a gathering of some 1,500 students at a Tehran university. The clash forced the students to halt the meeting during which student leaders had been delivering speeches criticizing Iran's religious hard-liners. The meeting brought students from several Tehran universities.

In the past several weeks there have been repeated clashes between students calling for reforms and Basij militia members. Student activism was sparked by the sentencing last month of a reformist academic to death for criticizing the religious establishment.

Four student leaders have also been detained and could face further charges.
