Russia: Court To Consider Release Of Jailed Reporter

Vladivostok, 15 January 2003 (RFE/RL) -- A lawyer representing former Russian military journalist Grigorii Pasko said today that a court will consider his early release from prison next week. Pasko was convicted of treason and has served two-thirds of his four-year prison sentence, which makes him eligible for early release.

Lawyer Anatolii Pyshkin said a court in Russia's Far Eastern city of Ussuriisk, where Pasko is serving his sentence, will meet tomorrow to discuss the reporter's case.

Pyshkin earlier said that officials at the prison would discuss Pasko's possible release today.

Pasko is a former naval officer who wrote an expose in 1993 concerning the Russian Navy's dumping of nuclear waste in the Pacific Ocean.
