Minsk, 15 January 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Belarus today denied shipping military equipment to Iraq, a day after Lebanese security officials said they seized a shipment of goods from Minsk to Baghdad in violation of a UN embargo against Iraq. The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Belarus "strictly respects" its international obligations with regard to military sales. It added that Minsk's cooperation with Iraq is in compliance with UN regulations.
Lebanese officials said yesterday that they had seized a shipments of helmets and tank communication equipment which arrived Sunday night aboard a flight from Minsk. They said the shipment was intended for transit by land to Iraq via Syria.
Two Lebanese nationals were held for questioning.
