Bosnia: U.S., Allies To Boost Efforts to Capture Karadzic

Sarajevo, 23 January 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. envoy on war crimes issues says the United States and its allies will boost efforts to arrest and prosecute former Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic (pictured). Pierre-Richard Prosper made the comment today in Sarajevo after talks with Bosnia's top international official, Paddy Ashdown. Prosper said the U.S. and the international community are preparing coordinated action to bring Karadzic to trial before the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague. He did not elaborate.

Ashdown said he and other international officials will take action against the "support mechanisms [and] the structure supporting Mr. Karadzic."

Prosper is set to travel to the Bosnian Serb capital Banja Luka tomorrow to urge Prime Minister Dragan Mikerevic and his authorities to do more to bring Karadzic to justice.
