Tehran, 11 March 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov today called for a global alliance against a possible war in Iraq. Speaking in Tehran during a meeting with Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, Ivanov said that for the sake of global peace and justice, the world should form an alliance against a war in Iraq. Ivanov said a peaceful solution to the Iraq crisis should be sought through the United Nations and that a unilateral approach by the United States toward Iraq could intensify tensions in the region.
Khatami reiterated Iran's call for a peaceful solution to the Iraq crisis, saying the world is weary from constant war and terrorism.
Ivanov also commented on Iran's nuclear program, saying the country's nuclear facilities are for purely peaceful purposes.
Earlier today, Ivanov reiterated Russia's intention to veto a draft UN resolution authorizing a war on Iraq.
