Moscow, 17 June 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Eleven coal miners in Russia died after a cave-in, and several others were trapped underground. The deputy director of Siberia's Kemerovo region, Anatoly Dyupin, said today that of the seven trapped miners, four were able to signal to rescuers that they were still alive nearly 18 hours after part of the mine collapsed yesterday.

Three miners managed to escape yesterday, and rescuers pulled out two injured workers from the Ziminka mine in the town of Prokopyevsk.
