Paris, 2 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- A French court today ordered the conditional release of Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the political wing of the Iranian opposition group Mujahedin Khalq. Rajavi and other members of the movement were detained in France on 17 June for alleged links to a terrorist organization and funding terrorist activities. The crackdown sparked protests among the group's supporters throughout France.
Rajavi's lawyer, Henri Leclerc, said she must pay a bail of 80,000 euros ($92,200) to be released from preventive detention.
The Paris appeals court today also ordered the release of eight other members of the group arrested along with Rajavi.
The Mujahedin Khalq Organization seeks to topple Iran's clerical government. It had an army in neighboring Iraq that was disarmed by U.S. forces there in April. The United States lists it as a terrorist organization.
