Tikrit, 7 August 2003 (RFE/RL) -- A top U.S. military official in Iraq says Saddam Hussein is eluding U.S. forces by moving frequently and in disguise. Major General Ray Odierno told reporters today the deposed Iraqi leader is on the run and is moving every three to four hours. Odierno said Hussein is probably being helped by members of his clan.
Odierno commands the 4th Infantry Division area, which is policing the area around Hussein's hometown of Tikrit. He said intelligence reports indicate Hussein is in the area, but that he cannot be certain.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military says U.S. forces detained seven Iraqis early today in raids in and around Tikrit. The seven, including two former Iraqi generals, are suspected of organizing attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq.
