Beijing, 26 August 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The Iranian foreign minister has reportedly told the Chinese president that Tehran has no plans to develop nuclear weapons. The "People's Daily" newspaper says Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi made the remark to Chinese President Hu Jintao during a meeting yesterday in Beijing.
The newspaper reports Kharazi said the country's nuclear energy program is completely transparent. He also reportedly said Iran is willing to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The "People's Daily" reports Hu told his guest that China opposed the proliferation of nuclear weapons in any form but supported international cooperation for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Washington has accused Tehran of pursuing a nuclear weapons program.
