Serbia: Belgrade Declares Kosovo 'Indivisible' Part Of Country

Belgrade, 27 August 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The Serbian parliament today unanimously adopted a declaration stating that Kosovo is an "indivisible" part of Serbia. The document was backed by both the opposition and parties of the ruling Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) coalition.

Serbia's Kosovo region was placed under UN protection in 1999 following a crackdown against its ethnic Albanian majority by ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's regime and a NATO intervention against Yugoslavia.

The parliament, in its statement, formally affirmed its position that "state sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Serbia...[also] relates to Kosovo regardless of the interim international administration."

Just before the declaration was passed, Kosovar Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi said the declaration "raises tensions."
