London, 10 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Britain today granted "political asylum" to self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovskii, who Russia has been trying to extradite on fraud charges. Ladimir Voronkov, an aide to the Russian billionaire, said that Britain's Home Office had informed Berezovskii by letter that his asylum request has been granted.
The British Home Office has not confirmed the asylum. Berezovskii has been living in London, evading the Russian government's charges, which he says are politically motivated.
