Vienna, 11 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The 35 members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) may vote today on a draft resolution that would give Iran until 31 October to fully comply with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Britain, France, and Germany submitted the resolution at the start of the UN's nuclear watchdog's talks this week in Vienna.
Muhamad el-Baradei, the agency's director general, said after yesterday's closed-door session that there is "broad agreement" within the UN agency's Board of Governors to give Iran a deadline to declare all of its nuclear activities.
Inspectors with the UN agency say they recently found traces of weapons-grade, highly-enriched uranium at an Iranian nuclear facility. But Iran says its nuclear program is aimed only at generating electricity.
Yesterday, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said Iran may reconsider its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog if it is denied the right to what he called "a peaceful" nuclear program.
