Moldova: Chisinau Asks Council Of Europe's Help With Romania

Chisinau, 13 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Moldova asked the Council of Europe today for help in its growing conflict with neighboring Romania. Moldova's Foreign Ministry said last week's refusal by Romania to sign a treaty confirming Moldova's present borders and other interstate relations threatens economic development and security in Moldova. Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase publicly rejected signing the treaty. Nastase says Romania recognizes Moldova's independence and no further pact is needed.

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will likely discuss the matter at a regularly scheduled meeting in Chisinau set to begin 5 November.
