Baku, 18 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The main Azerbaijani opposition politician, Musavat (Equality) Party leader Isa Qambar says he and his followers are determined to continue their "peaceful struggle for democracy." "No threats will intimidate me and my comrades-in-arms. We will continue peaceful struggle for democracy in accordance with the constitution of Azerbaijan regardless of arrests or repression because we know we are right," he said.
Qambar spoke today after Prime Minister Ilham Aliyev warned that the opposition leader faces the "condemnation" of the Azerbaijani people as a "person who causes bloodshed."
He said law enforcement officials will determine whether Qambar should be arrested. The opposition accuses Aliyev's government of rigging the 15 October election and international observers say the election failed to meet international standards.
