Al-Fallujah, Iraq; 20 October 2003 (RFE/RL) - The U.S. military command says one U.S. soldier was killed and five were wounded today when unknown assailants ambushed a foot patrol just outside Al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad. The U.S. command said the patrol, from the 82nd Airborne Division, was first hit by an exploding homemade bomb, and then by small-arms fire. The paratroopers raided a nearby mosque in an apparent search for the attackers, and detained three Iraqis.
Unconfirmed reports say two Iraqi civilians also were killed in the attack.
The attack is at least the third in two days on U.S. troops in the flashpoint city, 50 kilometers west of Baghdad.
