Russia: With Nearly Half The Votes Counted, Pro-Putin Party Has Huge Lead


Prague, 8 December 2003 (RFE/RL) -- With results coming in from Russia's parliamentary election, the party backing President Vladimir Putin is clearly ahead. With just under 47 percent of the vote counted, the pro-Kremlin Unified Russia party leads with about 36 percent.

The Communist Party is now in second with 12.9 percent of the vote, moving just slightly ahead of the ultranationalist party of Vladimir Zhirinovskii, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russian, in third with 12.8 percent.
