Russia: Prosecutors Seek Extended Detention Of Khodorkovskii

Moscow, 19 December 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Russian prosecutors today said they have requested that oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovskii (pictured) be kept in pretrial detention for three more months. A Moscow court is due on Monday (22 December) to grant or reject the request to extend his detention, which was due to end on 30 December. The former head of the Yukos oil company has been in custody since October on charges of tax evasion, fraud, and embezzlement.

Meanwhile, the Interfax news agency reported that Russian prosecutors in the central Samara region today seized documents belonging to a refinery subsidy of Yukos. Investigators reportedly seized documents concerning tax payments by the Kuybyshev refinery for 1999.
