Basiji Vs. Students

The website of the students of Tehran's Amir Kabir University has posted a video of some of yesterday's clashes between students and government forces, including Basiji paramilitaries.

The students were protesting the burial of the remains of five soldiers killed during the Iran-Iraq War at the university. According to the website, a number of students were injured and detained.

In the video, the students are shouting "Basiji, get lost!" More pictures here of a man, who's not in uniform, beating the students.

The burial of war dead at Iran's universities has become a trend since President Mahmud Ahmadinejad came to power. As Tehran's mayor, he had plans to bury war dead in the city's public squares.

Students see the burials as an attempt by the government to gain greater control over the universities, while officials say the aim is merely to keep alive the memories of the "martyrs."
