NATO Helicopter Shot Down In Afghanistan; Four Dead

NATO and the U.S. military say a NATO helicopter was shot down by insurgents in southern Afghanistan today, killing four U.S. troops on board.

The alliance said the helicopter went down in Helmand Province. It gave no further details on the incident.

The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying its fighters had fired two rockets to bring down the helicopter.

U.S. forces in Afghanistan have increasingly concentrated on the country’s south -- the Taliban's heartland -- in recent months as part of U.S. President Barack Obama's strategy to try to end the nearly nine-year-old insurgency.

At least 28 NATO troops have been killed in Afghanistan this month.
