Tatarstan: Russian Republic of Tatarstan celebrates the 20th anniversary of its Declaration of State Sovereignty.
Ukraine: Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych travels to Germany to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
TUESDAY, August 31:
Azerbaijan: The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission holds a regular monitoring session on the Line of Contact between Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijani armed forces.
Iraq: U.S. President Barack Obama makes a major address on Iraq.
Kosovo: New commander of NATO force in Kosovo takes over.
Russia: Russian opposition and human rights activists hold a March of Dissent in Moscow and other cities.
Tajikistan: U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake travels to Dushanbe (to September 1).
WEDNESDAY, September 1:
Russia: Anniversary of the tragic 2004 events in Beslan, when a group of militants demanding an end to the war in Chechnya took more than 1,000 children and adults hostage at a school.
