Three Killed, More Than 20 Wounded In Moscow Cemetery Brawl

Three people have been killed in a mass brawl at Moscow's largest cemetery.

Russian news reports said some 200 people, some armed with guns, steel bars, and other weapons took part in the May 14 clashes at the Khovanskoye cemetery in southwest Moscow.

At least 26 people were taken to hospital, four of whom were seriously injured.

More than 90 people were detained after riot police broke up the brawl.

Media reports said ethnic groups from ex-Soviet Central Asia and the Caucasus were fighting over the cemetery's lucrative services business.

A cemetery official was quoted as saying people from Russia's North Caucasus regions of Chechnya and Daghestan attacked migrants from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan working there, attempting to take over their jobs.

Ethnic Chechens, Daghestanis, Uzbeks, and Tajiks were reportedly among those detained.

Based on reporting by Reuters, AFP, TASS, and the BBC

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
