Russian Intelligence Suspected Of Hacking U.S. Journalists

U.S. officials say reporters at The New York Times and other U.S. news organizations have been targeted by hackers suspected of working on behalf of Russian intelligence.

CNN reported on August 23 that U.S. security agencies had detected the intrusions in recent months and are investigating.

"Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said," according to CNN.

The FBI declined to comment, and representatives for the U.S. Secret Service, which has a role in protecting the country from cybercrime, did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

News of the cyberattack comes amid a wave of similar attacks targeting major U.S. political parties that have surfaced in recent weeks ahead of the November 8 presidential election.

Based on reporting by CNN, Reuters, and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
