Another Student Activist Detained In Iran

Student activist Hasti Khazravi has been detained by Iranian authorities.

Khazravi is a member of the women's commission of the Office to Foster Unity (Daftare Tahkim Vahdat), Iran's largest reformist student organization, and is also a member of the Islamic Council of Khaje Nasirddin Toosi University in Tehran.

The reason for Khazravi's arrest and the charges against her are not known.

Milad Assadi, one of Khazravi's colleagues and a member of the central council of Daftare Tahkim Vahdat, told RFE/RL's Radio Farda that Khazravi's arrest is an attempt by the Iranian government to sow fear among student activists at the beginning of the academic year. He said he believes the government is trying to limit student political activities, especially efforts by female students protesting against discrimination in universities.

In the past three years, a number of student activists have been detained, summoned to court, and sent to prison in Iran. Many have been also banned from classrooms for the activities.
