Reports from the United States today said former Vice President Al Gore and his wife Tipper are planning to separate after 40 years of marriage.

An aide to the Gore family, Kalee Kreider, confirmed the reports saying the Gores are asking for people to respect their privacy.

Al Gore was Bill Clinton's vice president and then made an unsuccessful for the presidency against George Bush in 2000.

Gore later won the Nobel peace prize in 2007 for raising awareness of global climate change and an Oscar the same year for the documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth" that looked at global warming.
