A court in Nazran has refused to classify the recent shooting death of an Ingush opposition leader as murder.

Magomed Yevloyev, an Ingush politician and owner of the opposition website ingushetia.ru, was shot dead in a police vehicle on August 31 after being detained at the airport.

Officials say the shooting was accidental.

The Yevloyev's family lawyer, Musa Pliyev, told RFE/RL's Russian Service that the court is under pressure from the local prosecutor's office to clear the police of wrongdoing in Yevloyev's death.

Pliyev said that the Ingushetian leadership planned and carried out the killing.
