Iran Urges France To Free Engineer Wanted By U.S.

TEHRAN -- Iran has urged French authorities to free an Iranian student arrested in France for allegedly breaking the trade embargo on Iran.

Majid Kakavand, a 37-year-old electrical engineering student, was arrested in March at the request of the United States on suspicion he sent electronic equipment with both civilian and military uses to Iran.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman today said Kakavand was "innocent" and accused French authorities of using the case to pressure Iran.

A French researcher, Clotilde Reiss, is currently on trial in Iran for taking part in postelection, antigovernment protests in July.
