Moscow Seeking Belarusian Construction Workers

MINSK -- Authorities in Moscow say they are trying to attract migrant workers from Belarus to work on construction projects in the Russian capital.

Marina Orlova of the Moscow Mayor’s Office told RFE/RL's Belarus Service on December 11 that Moscow is facing a deficit of qualified professionals in that industry.

She said Moscow officials are currently holding talks with Belarusian construction companies on possible cooperation.

Belarusians do not need a work permit to be eligible to work in Russia.

Meanwhile, thousands of Central Asian guest workers need such a permit and thousands of them have been the victims of racial attacks.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
