'Neda (You Will Not Defeat The People)'

Inspired by the tragic video of Neda, a young Iranian woman apparently killed during protests on the streets of Tehran, a Canadian singer and songwriter named Johnny Maudlin has written a song called "Neda (You Will Not Defeat The People)."

"If John Kennedy was alive today, he would say, 'I am an Iranian!' Maudlin writes in a message accompanying his YouTube video. "A woman called Neda died on the streets of Tehran this weekend. This is the real cost of freedom. This is not something many of us understand, I don't think. I have not felt this moved in my memory. Long live Neda!"

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
