Pakistani authorities say security forces have clashed with Taliban militants near the Afghan border, leaving six troops and some 30 militants dead.

The fighting occurred today in the northwestern Orakzai tribal region.

Pakistani forces launched an operation in Orakzai in mid-March to flush out militants who last year fled an army onslaught further south.

Government official Sami Ullah said Pakistani forces have killed some 250 militants in the region in the past three weeks.

Those figures cannot be independently confirmed.

The fighting has forced out thousands of civilians who have moved to a government camp in nearby Kohat.
