A human rights activist says that abuse of soldiers in the army of Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region is worsening.
Tiraspol-based Grigory Volovoy told RFE/RL's Moldovan Service today that four men have been killed this year while serving in the Transdniestrian Army.
He said Transdniester officials report the deaths as naturally caused or as suicides.
Volovoy said that a young soldier's death was recently declared the result of a heart attack, but it was later determined that he had been beaten to death by other soldiers.
Transdniester is a de facto independent territory within Moldova. Young men must serve 18 months in the region's army.
