Emergency services say a Thai soldier has been killed and 18 people wounded in clashes between security forces and antigovernment "Red Shirts" in Bangkok today.

The soldier was shot in the head during a tense confrontation, which came as hundreds of soldiers and police officers blocked a convoy of some 2,000 protesters who had left their fortified rally base in the centre of the capital.

It was not immediately clear who shot the soldier.

It was the latest incident in Thailand's seven-week political crisis, which peaked on April 10 when a total of 26 people were killed and 900 wounded in clashes between security forces and protesters.
